2-point-picture

According to Bob Lynn, a 2-point-picture is a great photograph made during an otherwise dull assignment.

I got rousted out of an otherwise normal afternoon of attending picture story class to cover an assignment. The story is about how rent will be increased once more at the end of the semester for the university’s family housing community, Evergreen terrace.

I got there at 2 p.m., as I was told, only to find that there were not a whole lot of picture opportunities. I really had the rest of the day to photograph this so I decided to come back when the school bus arrived.

When I came back it was lightly raining. I beat the bus by a close 30 seconds and ran up to the stop. Children poured from the bus. Some with umbrellas, others covering their heads with book bags and others just running as if speed would somehow reduce their chances of getting wet. I photographed a little girl, got caption info, moved in closer to the bus. Tried a few framing shots, focused on another little girl with a yellow hood. She turned away but I was pre-focused; at f/2.8 she will be sharp and leave the yellow monster a flattering soft blur behind her. I waited but she didn’t turn. Then another girl exited the bus, distraught, and ran into the arms of an awaiting woman.

After struggling through the day with her allergies, 7-year-old Inaya Williams finds comfort in the arms of Whitney Stewart. Stewart works as part of the after school program at Evergreen Terrace.
